The Westword Music Showcase started back in October 1995 with thirty local bands playing venues around LoDo, right by where Coors Field had opened earlier that year. If you’d asked the average American to compile a list of the country’s hot music scenes at the time, Colorado probably wouldn’t have made the cut. Few performers from these parts had made the leap from area stardom to national renown, though a folksinger who’d taken the name of Colorado’s capital had helped put the scene on the map.
Since then, this town’s music business has boomed, with more and more Denver bands breaking out nationally and the Mile High City becoming a must-stop for touring national acts.
But while much has changed, the goal of the Westword Music Showcase remains the same: to celebrate the music scene. This year marks the 25th edition of the Showcase, and the stage is set for an unforgettable and historic celebration. In 2003, we moved the party into the Golden Triangle neighborhood, which has become one of the city’s top arts and culture districts; the Showcase adds to that reputation by putting on Denver’s biggest single-day music festival, with two main outdoor stages that will host national headliners CHVRCHES, Jai Wolf, JAUZ, Bishop Briggs, Crooked Colours, lovelytheband, The Knocks, The Wrecks and SHAED.
Venues throughout the neighborhood will showcase dozens of Denver’s best and brightest bands; all of the local acts performing are contenders for the 2019 Westword Music Awards. The nominees on this ballot were chosen with input from more than 250 of the state’s music experts, from talent buyers and DIYspace operators to fans, who shared their favorite Front Range acts in categories as diverse as reggae, classical and ambient. (Some of Denver’s most popular acts, such as iZCALLi and Porlolo, have performed at the Showcase multiple times; those acts are not included on this ballot, giving more rising bands a shot at the spotlight.) Look through our list of nominated bands, check out the local acts that will be performing at the Westword Music Showcase on Saturday, June 29, then vote for your favorites at westwordshowcase.com. The deadline for voting is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.
